NEWS RELEASE

Gwinn Area Community Schools Superintendent, Michael R. Maino, announced today that all Gwinn students in kindergarten through 6th grade will now receive free breakfast and free lunch, courtesy of the Federal Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010.  Under the Act, the Community Eligibility Option (CEO) authorizes free meals for all students in any local school building that has a percentage of directly certified students (Free and Reduced) of 40% or more.  The CEO provides schools that participate in the National School Lunch Program with an alternative method for counting and claiming student meals in buildings with high Free & Reduced percentages.

Michigan was one of three states selected to operate the CEO for 2011-12.

The Gwinn School District applied to the Michigan Department of Education for the CEO and received notification that all students at George D. Gilbert Elementary School and KI Sawyer Elementary School qualify for the program.  According to Maino, “there is no question that a good breakfast and good lunch make it easier for children to concentrate on school activities each day.  This program will make it easier, from an economic standpoint, for parents to assure their children get those good meals every day.”
